North Carolina State Prisons Release Search

To find someone released from North Carolina State Prisons after a Haywood County case, use the statewide correctional record rather than the county jail channel. No state prison has been identified as physically located in Haywood County, yet a person sentenced in the county may later enter state custody elsewhere. A North Carolina state-prison release search must distinguish admission, transfer, physical release, post-release supervision, and final discharge. The state offender record and release index preserve those distinctions, while the county court file supplies the judgment that led into the correctional system.

North Carolina Prison Release Paths

North Carolina state prisons are institutions operated by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, or NCDAC. No NCDAC prison was identified in the official sources as physically located in Haywood County. The system belongs in the facility map because people can leave the Haywood County Detention Center for a state institution, and people convicted in Haywood can serve sentences at institutions elsewhere in North Carolina.

A transport from the county jail to NCDAC is not a release. It is a change of custodian. Later, a state prisoner may leave physical confinement for post-release supervision, discretionary parole in an eligible older case, another authority, or final discharge. The state record should be used for those events. A Haywood jail recent-release record cannot stand in for a prison release date, and a state result cannot prove that a person who only served a local jail stay was released.

System, not local facility: North Carolina State Prisons is statewide coverage. No physical state prison was found in Haywood County.

NCDAC Release Record Fields

The public offender record separates physical incarceration from supervision. That design matters after release. A top identity panel can show an offender photograph, offender number, Inmate Status, and Probation/Parole/Post Release Status. The incarceration panel may show total term, conviction date, projected release date, admission date, location, release type, and last movement. Individual sentence blocks can add commitment type, county of conviction, sentence begin date, actual release date, punishment type, minimum and maximum term, docket number, offense, and service status.

FieldHow to read it
Inmate StatusWhether the state incarceration record is active or inactive.
Actual Release DateA completed custody date in the sentence history.
Projected Release DateA forecast that can change, not proof of release.
Release TypeThe state label for the movement out of that incarceration period.
Supervision StatusWhether probation, parole, or post-release supervision is active or inactive.
Last MovementA dated change that must be read in context.

Inactive incarceration plus an actual release date and compatible release movement is stronger than any single label. Active supervision can lawfully continue after prison release. Inactive supervision can mean that community supervision ended. Neither should be merged with the incarceration status.

Haywood State Release Index

NCDAC also publishes a dedicated Inmate Release Search. It can be queried by last name or by release county, year, and month. “HAYWOOD” appears as a release-county selection, but this does not make the results a Haywood County jail release list. It means NCDAC coded Haywood as the state release county for that correctional event.

The result columns are Offender Number, Last Name, First Name, Middle Name, Release Date, Primary Offense (Qualifier), and Type Of Release. The offender number opens the full state record. When checked in the research, the year list offered 2024, 2025, and 2026, making the dedicated form a rolling recent-year index. Search older events through the general offender search instead of assuming they do not exist.

A release-county result also does not show a physical prison in Haywood. The person could have served elsewhere and been associated with Haywood for the release record. Likewise, a Haywood conviction does not guarantee Haywood is the coded release county. Preserve the state's exact field labels.

State Release and Supervision

Modern North Carolina felony sentences can include post-release supervision, often shortened to PRS. PRS is a statutory period in the community after physical release from prison. It is not the same as probation, which is imposed by a court, and it is not the same as discretionary parole, which mainly applies to older sentencing structures and narrow eligible categories. The North Carolina Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission establishes or enforces applicable conditions.

Prison release
The person leaves NCDAC physical confinement for the recorded destination or status.
Post-release supervision
The community-supervision part of a modern felony sentence.
Parole
Conditional discretionary release in a legally eligible case.
Discharge
The end of the applicable correctional or supervision obligation shown by the record.

A prison release date and sentence termination date may differ. If the record shows inactive incarceration with active PRS, physical confinement ended while state supervision continues. A violation can later change the record through revocation or return to custody. Read the most recent supervision block for its begin and end data rather than predicting an outcome.

North Carolina Prison Records

The public search is an index and status tool, not a substitute for every official record. For a durable state-prison release or supervision record, use NCDAC records channels. DAC states that it maintains records for people who served a sentence in a DAC prison or participated in state parole or probation supervision. It does not hold the booking-and-release record for someone whose entire stay was at the Haywood jail.

A useful inquiry identifies the offender number, full legal name, birth date if appropriate, conviction county, docket number, and the requested time period. Specify whether the need is for sentence history, admission, movement, actual release, release type, projected release, or supervision. If a court judgment is needed, ask the Haywood Clerk of Superior Court, because a county court file and an NCDAC movement record answer different questions.

NC SAVAN/VINELink can add custody-event notification for state prisons. It is useful for alerts, but the NCDAC sentence and movement record remains the better source for the exact type of release.

State Prison Search Limits

A missing state result does not prove release. Spelling, aliases, data timing, an incorrect birth date, or a purely local jail episode can explain it. Conversely, an active state result after the Haywood phone channel stops returning the person is evidence of transfer into state custody, not evidence of community release. The county and state systems cover different populations.

Projected release dates can change with lawful credits, disciplinary consequences, court action, detainers, or recalculation. A Next Control Review is a custody-classification event, not a parole review or release date. A future release date should remain labeled projected. Once an actual release appears, verify any continued supervision and do not paraphrase the event as final discharge unless the record supports that separate conclusion.

Note: Search the state record by offender number first, then use the Haywood court docket to confirm the judgment behind the sentence.

Haywood County Versus State Release

The custody boundary controls the correct record. HCSO documents admission to and departure from the Haywood County Detention Center. NCDAC documents admission to state prison, movement among state institutions, sentence data, physical release from state incarceration, and state community supervision. The Haywood Clerk preserves the county judgment and commitment that can connect the two systems.

A person can disappear from Haywood's current phone information and then appear as an active NCDAC inmate. That sequence supports transfer into state custody, not a return to the community. Later, the NCDAC record may show inactive incarceration, an actual release date, a release type, and active post-release supervision. That is a prison release with continued legal supervision. Final discharge is a later and separate status when the record supports it.

The dedicated NCDAC release index should also stay type-correct. Selecting Haywood as release county does not report everyone who left the county jail, and it does not identify a prison building in Haywood. It returns state correctional releases coded to that county within the available year and month choices. For a named local booking that never became a DAC sentence, return to HCSO and the court file rather than forcing a state match.
